This is one of the most current and luscious Westerns ever made. What sets it apart is the relative lack of action, the procedure that director William Wyler shifts most of the interest onto the relationship and interpersonal interplay between Cole Hardin (Gary Cooper, in one of his finest Western roles) and Think Roy Bean (Walter Brennan) . The draw the two recede from instant enemies, to unexpected friends, to uneasy opponents, to reluctant enemies, and finally assist to sympathetic friends is masterfully portrayed. As lovely as Cooper is, distinguished of the credit lies with Brennan, who became the first person to regain three acting Oscars by picking up his third Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Unlike his other Oscar wins, this role was essentially a lead role. Although many actors have portrayed Think Roy Bean over the years, Brennan’s is the definitive one, despite being the least historically suitable. If his version isn’t the most faithful, it is the most compelling. He manages to be utterly absurd, dangerously unpredictable, and utterly likable at the same time.

The record essentially falls into two halves. The first involves Gary Cooper’s accidental identification in Believe Bean’s saloon as a horse thief, his trial and conviction, and clever manipulation of the Believe to net a reprieve. The second half concerns Cooper’s taking sides in a range war, siding with a lone female farmer against cattlemen. Both halves are brought together nicely in Cooper and Brennan’s final struggle that ends the film.

Along with Walter Brennan and Gary Cooper, the actual star of this film is Gregg Toland, whose cinematography rivets the viewer’s attention on the shroud from beginning to destroy. Toland, who died tragically young in 1948 at the age of 44, is universally regarded as one of the very greatest cinematographers of all time, and THE WESTERNER was one of his finest efforts in a very, very stout scurry of films over a relatively short period of time. In the period running from 1939-41, Toland was responsible for filming such fantastic classics as WUTHERING HEIGHTS, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE WESTERNER, and CITIZEN KANE. Has any cinematographer ever had a two-year period matching this one? I saw THE WESTERNER years before I knew who Gregg Toland was, but I long retained the memory of several of the astonishing shots Toland framed. He was a current of director William Wyler, who would spend him often during Toland’s tragically short career.

Toland’s photography manages to give this film an story feel and scope, while the tensions in the relationship between Cooper and Brennan effect it a highly intimate film. This is easily one of the most new Westerns in the history of Holly, and one of the best.

The Westerner is simply one of the best westerns ever made. It starts of course with Gregg Toland’s unbelievable cinematography. “The Westerner” has all of the classic elements of the genre, the lonesome drifter (Cooper), the half-evil mediate (Brennan as Contemplate Roy Bean), the “searching-for-a-real-man” woman, the gang of thug rustlers (played by a gang of various thugs), the wimpy farmers (played by a bunch of wimpy farmers), the raunchy bar-room singer (played by a lock of golden hair), and the climatic shoot-out (Cooper versus Brennan) . The scenes that lift the movie are those in which Cooper pleasurable agress to gently crack Assume Roy Beans stiff neck with a swiftly twist. You can hear the pops and also feel the relief as you leer.

The movie is worth the money alone, an incredible sequel from another improbable movie. definitely the best anime movie i’ve ever seen.

However, the dvd sucks. sucks alot.

Dreamworks place no distress at all into this. let me list the cons

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence! Click Here

-bland, listless artwork

-no proper special features, simply imported from the jap. dvd release

-no english track (how dumb can you be? )

-the subtitle option is quite annoying, implying that the audience must all be deaf because they feel the need to subtitle every microscopic sound you hear… we’re not deaf we fair can’t understand japanese!!

its determined that dreamworks simply wanted to effect this out as quickly as they possiby could to cash in on the hype. it shows simply from the fact that the japanese got their dvd in november.. now how often does an anime arrive out here 1 month after the japanese release? usually it takes a year.

i bought this because i worship the movie, but i wish someone else would have gotten the rights to it. if dreamworks acquires another beneficial anime.. i will roar.

there is no doubt in my mind that within a year or two from now there will be a “special” version that will have Staunch special features, better artwork and packaging, and OH MY GOD an english track.

Basically it will be the version that should have been from the get-go.

Screw you dreamworks, you don’t know what the fans want. you’re anime distrubiting ways sicken me. why couldn’t you unbiased let bandai/manga earn the rights to this seeing how THEY HAVE THE REST OF THE FRANCHISE UNDER THEIR BELT. bandai would have made this the intention it should have been.

I do not know who at Dreamworks was responsible for this travesty of a DVD, but I would like to meet them so that I could relate them in person what a total hash they have made of the best anime (and one of the best films PERIOD) of the year. Never mind the imbecilic cloak art (which in no scheme reflects the breath-taking art in the film) – WHAT is the rationale for HEARING IMPAIRED subtitles?? I always exhaust subtitles – but as so many other people have written, I don’t need to be informed of the sounds in the background. The theatrical release didn’t have such intrusive subtitles – why are they here?!?! And let’s face it – dubbing is not exactly a novelty on ANY foreign DVD: why not get it available here? I can only buy that, as usual, the corporate honchos at Dreamworks didn’t actually Stare this, and handed it off to some hack who got their job because of radiant someBODY, not because they were competant. I will be waiting for Dreamworks (or maybe someone else with more intelligence) to re-release this. In the meantime – DON’T demolish your money on THIS DVD – rent it if you want to spy it, but Enlighten Dreamworks any more dough until they earn their act together and assign out a quality DVD that this film so richly deserves.

Ikki Tousen is based on Yuji Shiozaki’s over the top fighting manga of the same name.(In America its title is “Battle Vixens” published by Tokyo Pop.) .To be completely impartial with you the current manga is diagram better than it’s anime counterpart, but that’s not to say it isn’t worth a observe or two!

Loosely based on the “Romance of the three kingdoms” Ikki Tousen is primarily a fighting memoir.During the three kingdoms era several heroes tired to unite China and failed.Their spirits came to rest inside of jewels called magatama.Whoever inheirits these “sacred beads” has their bear natural fighting ability increased many fold. The down side however is that they must fight to become “Ikki Tousen”, one warrior with the stength of one thousand.Along with becoming ikki tousen the must live out the destiny of the warrior inside the magatama until they die.Unfortunately for Hakufu she loves to fight, so will she be able to overcome her destiny as the “Shou Hao of Koutou”?

Only time and the next few volumes will insist.All-in-all Ikki Tousen has a delicate decent storyline thats not too philishophically heavy with questions of morality or anything like that, it’s straight forward and to the point. The animation quality is well-behaved, the character designs are awesome, and the music is glowing wintry too.Defenitely not for the kiddies, it has a ton of panty shots, graphic fights scenes, and later on some more controversial and questionable issue. The final verdict is if your into fanservicey fights between girls in school uniforms then Ikki Tousen is good up your alley, if not then your missing out, and before I forget don’t forget to check out the origial sage in “Battle Vixens” from Tokyo Pop.Also avalible now at Amazon.com.

Make no mistake: this series is all about fanservice. Highly detailed panties, cleavage, etc. This series can best be described as “style over substance.” There’s a tale here somewhere, but it’s best not mediate about it too hard. They don’t give a lot of background on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (on which this series is loosely based) so it’s easy to lose the details in all the panties. I mean, how is a guy supposed to withhold track of people who died 1800 years ago and of what’s going on in the display while not being distracted by the fanservice?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ikki Tousen – Legendary Fighter! Click Here

My theory on the excessive fanservice is that it must be there for comedic accomplish, though it often misses the stamp. But compose no mistake, this explain would be a very heavy series without the fanservice to remind you “hey, don’t catch this indicate so seriously.” The panties go a long blueprint toward distracting you from not only the incomprehensible backstory, but also from everybody getting the crap kicked out of them.

For those who are looking for a point of reference, I can’t serve you noteworthy. This series is very hard to classify. It’s not quite like a fighting reveal, a comedy, or a drama. It does pick elements from various series and meshes them as well as can be expected. The main character, Hakufu, is somewhat like a female Goku from Dragonball: loves a fight, but not very shining. In a suprise depart, there’s even a lecher. Ok, it’s not really a suprise as there’s a sterotypical lecher in nearly every anime. Dragonball had master Roshi, Burn Up had Yuji, Inuyasha had Miroku. The suprise is who the lecher is: Hakufu’s mom! Very comic.

If you’re looking for a capable chronicle, sustain looking. If you’re looking for social commentary, retain looking. If you don’t mind fanservice and adore action, then this might be for you. The series is extremely well intelligent, and the memoir, such as it is, is told fairly well. Luckily, the backstory is largely irrelevant. The Romance of the Three Kingdom stuff is great to know, but if you don’t know it already don’t trouble about it on your first viewing of this series.

This exquisite drama about a unruffled English village and its inhabitants during the early days of WWII is perfect in every plot. Director William Wyler was himself flying a bombing mission over Germany the night the Academy got it fair and singled it out as Best Recount. Like the hat Greer Garson purchases despite the cost, this film is rather precious, and if made tomorrow, would collected gather the award for Best Record.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mrs. Miniver! Click Here

Wyler was delivered a fantastic script from screenwriters Arthur Wimpers, George Froeschell, James Hilton, and Claudine West. Greer Garson’s restrained performance as Jan Struther’s heroine won her Best Actress honors but the entire cast is equally genuine, Teresa Wright especially so as the intellectual and cheery young woman who would marry the Miniver’s son and note them all the plot.

Wyler paints a radiant portray of day-to-day life in 1939 for the Miniver family and the exiguous village where they live. Greer Garson is the nice Mrs. Miniver. An early scene when the kind porter Mr. Ballard (Henry Travers) reveals to her that he has named the resplendent red rose he intends to enter in the yearly floral contest after her, sets the feelings and mood of the entire film. The myth of the white rose turning red from tears yet made more glowing was not lost on audiences on both sides of the pond. If ever a film gave the world a decide to stand up to harmful, this smooth and touching film certainly did.

Wyler shows the poignancy of young men going off to war as the Miniver’s young son, Vin, home from college and elephantine of ideals, joins the R.A.F. There is one terribly gripping scene as Garson listens with all her being as the planes soar over, waiting for Vin’s signal that he is one of those returning. Wyler shows the efforts of all during the early days of the war to support in any blueprint possible. Clem (Walter Pidgeon) will exhaust his dinky boat along with his fellow villagers in a hazardous rescue mission during the night, beautifully filmed by the director.

But through the air raids, which become matter-of-fact for the Miniver family, the joyous moments of living are shown by Wyler, leaving no doubt that life will and does go on. Dame May Whitty is good as the village’s most noteworthy woman, Lady Beldon. She is the grandmother of the sweet Carol, portrayed winningly by Teresa Wright. It is her romance with Vin (Richard Ney) which will provide the most poignant moment in the film, showing that tragedy could approach at any moment.

Garson’s frosty determine when confronting a downed German flyer in her kitchen is never to be forgotten. Neither are the moments of Mrs. Miniver’s diminutive children sleeping peacefully in the cellar during air raids hitting closer and closer to home while Clem talks and she knits. Unbiased as inviting, however, is the moment the winner for best rose is announced.

There is a deeply interesting and unexpected death, fair as it happened to many families, English and otherwise, during the war. But it will not defeat the Minivers or the village, and the final speech was so stirring that Roosevelt had leaflets of it dropped from the air all over Europe.

Rarely does something so intriguing have the substance of “Mrs. Miniver.” It is no wonder that Churchill said “Mrs. Miniver” was more principal to the war peril than an entire lickety-split of of destroyers ever could have been. A glowing and unforgettable film you can discover time and again with the entire family. A must perceive film for everyone.

“Mrs. Miniver” is one of those non-factual, war time propaganda dawdle jerkers that has proven itself to be enduring and immensely animated. Upon its release, Winston Churchill declared the film more influential in getting America keen in WWII than a posthaste of destroyers. The site concerns Mrs. Miniver (Greer Garson) the atypical English housewife quietly enduring the hardships of war and capturing a downed Nazi pilot in her begonias in the process. It sounds hoaky but actually the account is incredibly stirring. Walter Pigeon, Garson? s frequent costar, is cast as her tender husband, Clem. Richard Ney plays her slightly opinionated son, Vin who rises to the occasion and becomes a flyer for the RAF. Aside: Ney and Garson were carrying on an affair during the filming that eventually resulted in a disastrous marriage and a quicky divorce. Oh well, at least the relationships in the film are perfect. Of merit is Teresa Wright? s outstanding performance as Carol, Vin’s doomed fianc? e.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mrs. Miniver! Click Here

Previously issued versions of this film were approach perfect so it’s really no surprise to peek that this DVD carries on in the same tradition. Quite simply: the relate is outstanding. Blacks are deep and solid. The gray scale is glowing and well balanced. There is hardly a scratch or a bit of grit or grain to distract. The soundtrack is equally impressive in MONO but very, very nicely balanced. A bit of a disappointment comes from the fact that no one at Warner Brothers had the foresight to do a? making of? featurette. All we net is a couple of short subjects and a stills gallery.

It’s the year 2024, and most of the Earth’s nations have been demolished by yet another world war (the latest being WWIV) . In this postapocalyptic world, slow-witted survivor Vic (Don Johnson) forages through the ruins for food and women with the support of his faithful dog, Blood (voiced by Tim McIntire), with whom he is able to communicate telepathically. Blood, more knowing and more cultured than his young “master,” often gets impatient with Vic’s immature behavior and lack of interest in his attempts to educate the boy, but he nonetheless loves Vic and sticks with him to attend him survive. And after several minor adventures and one vast misadventure, Vic does learn one incontestable actuality: Nothing is more indispensable to a boy than his dog.

Based on an award-winning novella by the curmudgeonly SF writer Harlan Ellison, A BOY AND HIS DOG was adapted and directed by character actor L.Q. Jones and co-produced by Jones and Alvy Moore (the latter probably best known for his portrayal of scatterbrained Hank Kimball on TV’s GREEN ACRES) . While Ellison has said many times publicly that the film is the most faithful adaptation of any of his works, he has nonetheless complained vehemently about some of Jones’ “adjustments”–most notably the minor addition of some detestable or crude dialogue–and tried unsuccessfully to score them changed. Whether or not Ellison’s complaints have merit, A BOY AND HIS DOG has near to be regarded as a science-fiction classic, its popularity undoubtedly due to its likeable characters who, despite their constant bickering and individual quirks, are redeemed by their committed friendship and their sarcastically silly reach to survival.

The performances in A BOY AND HIS DOG are first-rate. Johnson convincingly portrays Vic as a filthy scavenger who, in spite of his dire site, peaceful manages to remain a decent human being at the core. Tim McIntire’s vocal characterization of Blood embodies Ellison’s current view of a mutant pooch with a caustic ego that is balanced with honest the good amount of off-beat humanity, and this portrayal is enhanced further by the outstanding on-screen performance of Tiger, the canine thespian that portrayed the family pet on TV’s THE BRADY BUNCH. In his supporting role as the governor of a subterranean dystopia, Jason Robards is delightfully smarmy. And when dazzling Susanne Benton bares her large “talents” on the veil, that’s a lot of fun view, too.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Boy And His Dog! Click Here

With A BOY AND HIS DOG, Jones’ draw is not to beget deep socio-political innuendos or to meet the average action-fan’s prosaic expectations, and sentimentality is obviously far from his mind. Instead of serving up a wearisome postapocalyptic survival-of-the-fittest thriller or a cliché love-among-the-ruins drama, Jones gives us a wry gloomy comedy that doesn’t buy itself too seriously. His direction is tight, his staging often inventive, and the dialogue–while MOSTLY lifted directly from Ellison’s story–is often sharply sardonic and frequently witty. With this AND the outstanding performances he elicits from his cast, Jones creates a realistic world of future desolation, but he peoples it with central characters that learn to deal with the nightmare while unruffled maintaining their humanity…and a sense of humor.

Several DVD editions of A BOY AND HIS DOG have been available over the past few years, and all have delivered satisfactory letterbox widescreen digital transfers. The unusual offering from First Bustle Features is an anamorphic widescreen version, and it also contains an consuming feature commentary and theatrical trailers.

All in all, A BOY AND HIS DOG is a fabulous interpretation of a classic SF novella, and this DVD will invent a gargantuan entry in the film collections of SF fans who like quirky non-mainstream films.

A cult popular for years, this faithful version of Harlan Ellison’s classic novella enjoyed some mainstream popularity in the mid-’80s when its star, Don Johnson, hit the grand time with “Miami Vice.” In unique years the movie has settled encourage into cult area, which is for the best. Johnson (in an suitable performance) is Vic, a simple-minded survivalist who wanders what’s left of post-apocalypse America with his dog Blood (played by Tiger of “The Brady Bunch,” with advise by singer Tim McIntire), with whom he has a telepathic bond. Vic’s main ambition in life is to, well, gain female companionship; he demands that Blood sniff out girls for him. He meets a seemingly innocent young woman who leads him down to a queer subterranean civilization where all the men are sterile. Eventually, Vic is presented with a hard choice. The decision he makes has remained controversial; the one-liner that ends the film is even more so. (Ellison didn’t write the line and has expressed discomfort with it. I contemplate it’s one of the big final lines in movie history.) If you haven’t seen this film, chances are you’ve seen a dozen better-known SF movies it influenced (like the “Angry Max” series), and Kevin Costner’s “The Postman” was a windbag ’90s variation on the same theme. If you’ve only caught this on television, you haven’t really seen it.

I unprejudiced purchased this unique anniversary edition of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (50th for the book and 40th for the special) . First, this is a single disc release – not the two-disc state that was originally announced. I stuck the disc into my player to check it out and I was pleasantly surprised. “The Grinch” has been cleaned-up and looks magnificent. And, yes, the Grinch is now GREEN! YEA!!! But be warned, “Horton Hears A Who” has NOT been cleaned-up. It is the same version that appeared on the previous release. There is a current special feature that looks arresting. BUT, there are a few things that have disappeared: Chapter stops for both specials are GONE!, Subtitles for both specials are GONE!, and the commentary for “The Grinch” is GONE! I drawl I can live without those in exchange for a green Grinch, though it is disappointing. Be prepared for the missing features if you opinion to upgrade. I do recommend this, though, as “The Grinch” looks so worthy better than the previous release.

***UPDATE*** 11/9/09

This anniversary edition has been discontinued and replaced by a very similar edition. The current 2009 edition was actually created in 2008 (the trailers are for upcoming DVDs – one year ago) and there are a couple of changes. First, the “Horton Hears A Who” feature has been dropped, I take, because it has since gotten its beget release. Second, the audio commentary has been restored. And third, the subtitles have been restored. Chapter stops are collected missing but that is ok as the special is only 25 minutes or so. I had a lot of grief getting this edition. I went through two copies from Amazon (and got a stout refund), a copy from Target, and a copy from Warner Brothers itself (they replaced the Target copy) . The jam was that the hide was from the modern 2009 version but the disc was the 2006 disc. I finally found a good version at Walmart today. There is no plot to know if it is lawful until you inaugurate it. The 2006 disc trace says “50th Birthday Deluxe Edition” while the 2009 disc designate honest says “Deluxe Edition.” The transfer itself is peaceful the color-corrected, green-Grinch version found on the 2006 DVD.

Forget the hideously overblown film version — if you want the precise thing, steal this double treat and luxuriate in the Grinch’s memoir the blueprint it was intended to be seen. Boris Karloff’s philosophize lends this wonderfully keen myth a hint of right menace, and the animation, spare and imaginative, creates an oddly familiar world that is both depressed and Christmasey — the perfect combo. The songs have become holiday traditions. The record of the Grinch is as grand a mystery of faith and joy as it is an spellbinding comedy. You will win the additional family treat of Horton Hears A Who, also an fascinating chronicle that explores the value of life itself. Dr. Seuss’ brilliance with conceptual family entertainment is on certain point to in both of these classic stories; you will not be disappointed. Merry Christmas.

The Amazon reviewer didn’t do this title justice. This is an adorable series about the hopes and dreams of 3 young women who hope to develop it huge in the pop music industry. The artwork is angular but not without appeal and once you find old to it it’s definite the angular style is intentional and seeks to step away from the “cutesy” stylization inherent in anime and instead bring the viewer closer to a more realistic world.

The account is paced but delibarate, and more than anything the feel of the display reminds me of the better parts of the 80’s TV explain “Fame.” While romance is only a monor aspect of Chance Pop Session it is a proper title for anyone who likes anime drama along the lines of Fruits Basket, Someday Dreamers, Millenium Actress, Video Girl AI or perhaps Ai Yori Aoshi. Parents might capture heed that this title has no nudity, gratuitous sex or even famous violence.

I watched this fully expecting to abhor it and have instead found myself moved… and I don’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking for a superb, gentle, uplifting drama.

I bought this DVD on an impulse for less than $10, and let me objective say that it’s worth every penny. Granted, for those out there who are die-hard anime buffs, “Chance Pop Session” won’t raise any eyebrows, but it’s tranquil an toothsome “American-Idol-esque” memoir about three girls following their dreams. At times, yes, it can go a slight dumb, but the quirky puny pop songs snappily become infectious, and you’ll win yourself humming to the tunes long after it’s done. Select a chance on “Chance Pop Session”!

Compare Prices on Glenn Gould: Hereafter

This DVD is self-recommending if only because it is by our leading music documentarian, Bruno Monsaingeon, and is about one of music’s legendary figures, Glenn Gould. Add to that the fact that Monsaingeon and Gould were friends for thirty years and that Monsaingeon had already made a number of previous documentaries about Gould, and you have a recipe for a colossal film. Monsaingeon is a working musician (a violinist) as well and his ability to understand the musical aspects of Gould’s life is beyond interrogate. (There is even a clip of Monsaingeon playing first violin in a snippet of Gould’s Opus 1, his String Quartet.) Gould, of course, was himself a documentarian and he certainly left tedious miles of film in which he plays, discourses about music and all manner of other things. There are even home movies of Gould as a young teen playing on the family piano.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Glenn Gould: Hereafter! Click Here

One charming conceit of the film is that Monsaingeon found five ‘ordinary people’ whose lives had been touched in special ways by Gould’s playing and he filmed them in various activities connected with that. For instance, there is a worn rock musician who goes gorgeous far to commemorate her emotional connection with Gould — I won’t spoil the surprise by telling you what it was she did. There is a Russian woman who develops a missionary fervor about exposing others to Gould’s music. There is an Italian woman who makes a pilgrimage to Toronto and has a dialog with the startlingly lifelike statue of Gould that sits outside the Gould studio there.

One might wonder what more could be said about Gould after all the previous books and films about him. It is a tribute to Monsaingeon’s art that he found a contrivance to come his subject in a recent and intelligent manner. He constructs the documentary as if it were being narrated by Gould himself. Gould’s fabled Lincoln Continental becomes a character in the proceedings, traveling through ravishingly photographed northern Canadian forests as we hear Gould discourse in a voice-over on various things. There are numerous video and audio clips, some never seen before, that give us a taste of both his playing and his thinking. We hear and eye him play music not generally associated with him — especially by those who contemplate of Gould as being a Bach specialist — music by Hindemith, Chopin, Weber, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and others, even Gould’s quirky Mozart.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Glenn Gould: Hereafter! Click Here

Gould’s personal eccentricities are not emphasized but are not avoided either. One does, however, reach away, yet again, reminded of George Szell’s noted stutter about him, ‘That nut is a genius!’. Gould was an utterly current and principal figure and it is no wonder that almost twenty-five years after his tragic death at 50, in 1982, his life is serene being explored and notorious.

So, even if you’ve seen other films about Gould, including those by Monsaingeon, you will be rewarded by watching this film.

Strongly recommended.

Scott Morrison

Mr. Morrisson is a terrific reviewer – and I loathe to disagree with him so strongly… but I want to place forward to consideration at least the possibility that this Monsaigneon film about Glenn Gould’s Ghost (more or less) is an dreadful portion of shlock and surely (hopefully) Monsaigneon’s worst exertion. (I don’t distinguished like his Boulanger one either, but that’s a.) an early work and b.) not nearly as tacky as this hagiography here.)

I won’t say that this film *is* awful, but I believe it will be dreadful to many viewers who advance this with high hopes of learning more about GG, the person (or musician, for that matter) . Anyone who has read and enjoyed Kevin Bazzana’s “A Wondrous Queer”, for example, might near this one with caution. Why? Well, because it’s a hooky and kookey collection of reminiscenses about Gould by people who are in fancy with the conception of Gould. A Russian lady had her rheumaticism cured by listening to Gould on the radio, an Italian lady talks to (and even kisses? I don’t remember) his spirit and statue in Toronto… it’s the kind of mystisizing of Gould that will seem (legitimately) creepy to a lot of people. I could barely examine the whole thing. ‘Tis tacky and really has nothing to do with Gould but rather the wackiness that he inspired in others – others who didn’t even know him.

For what it is worth: I have talked to a friend of Glenn Gould’s who has written prolifically about him (and edited his letters), who similarly shuddered in disgust about this film.

With so noteworthy visual material that is left of Gould himself (CBC material, his radio shows et al.), this can’t be considered as seriously contributing to our idea of Gould. I’d remarkable rather recommend the “Thirty Two Short Films about Glenn Gould” semi-filmography.

To those who feel inclined to agree with the other, very determined reviews: I wish not to be so ungraceful as to hold a bone from a dog… but caveat emptor!

Set during the time Rambo ruled supreme in the box office, Son of Rambow is a quirky itsy-bitsy film that leaves me clueless as to who I would recommend it too.

Raised in a strict religious community in England, Will hides his inner world of wild imagination quite well from his mother.

Despite the fact he’s fairly cloistered from the outside world, he attends a secular school. While at school, because of The Brethren’s opinion system, he gets sent out into the hallway every time a teacher uses the telly in class or shows a movie. On one such day, while doodling in his private art book, another boy, Lee Carter, is sent into the hallway a few classrooms down. Only this boy is kicked out of class because he’s a troublemaker. Though Will does his best to screen from Lee, the mischievous boy draws him out and causes more difficulty for both of them.

During a bizarre twist of events, the two boys extinguish up playing together for the afternoon, with Will assisting Lee Carter in making a movie to enter into a local young film makers contest. Thus begins an unique friendship that will grasp young Will out of his stifling world and display his imagination to the outside, helping him face the death of a parent and the normal fears of growing up.

At first I wasn’t determined if I was going to like Lee Carter. Seemed too great a brat to me and he didn’t really treat Will all too well. But as they warm up to each other, things reverse as Will gets so wrapped up in the film making he forgets who his friends truly are. Eventually I found myself warming up to Lee and in the destroy I liked him honest as mighty as the sensitive Will, perhaps more.

What I enjoyed most about this movie was the design the boys opened up each others’ imagination, thus making them better people. (Particularly Will. That he could shatter free from such stricture and in turn free his family… it unprejudiced melts my heart.)

Son of Rambow is a surprisingly touching coming of age film that probably won’t appeal to others as remarkable as I. Unexcited, if you like a quirky bit of foreign film like me- give it a try!

One of the best movies of the year. Cute, very humorous, a small dark, but most importantly, an absolute blast to study. Reminds me why some of my current movies are forigen: Shawn of the Tedious, Pans Lab… If you’re into quirky, this is not only a must study, but a must fill. 4 thumbs up!

First, the movie. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is probably one of the scariest movies ever made. It was current for its time, and there’s tranquil nothing quite like it today. The station doesn’t sound like much- 2 women and 3 men manufacture a drive to rural Texas to check out a graveyard that has been ‘defiled’, and to also relax and luxuriate in themselves. This last section of their vacation view doesn’t go dependable smoothly, as they manufacture the mistake of wandering into an state where an insane, backwoods, inbred, cannibalistic sociopathic family live. Things come by more and more horrifying from there.

I’ve heard people complain this movie isn’t scary and not gory enough. As far as the gore, it is fairly low-key by today’s standards (though I’m clear my mother wouldn’t want to perceive it, and it couldn’t be shown un-cut on regular network TV) . There’s not a lot of blood till the extinguish of the movie, but the acting is so obliging, and the screams of the victims so wrenching, your imagination fills in the rest and it actually is painful to glance. I will agree that the movie is kind of boring to procure started- I admit the first time I saw it as a teenager I was getting impatient for some action. However, the last half of the movie more than makes up for it.

But if you believe this movie isn’t scary, I seriously doubt you’ve watched alone, at home, at night, with all the lights off. The first time I saw it was in the daytime, and it unexcited made my hair stand on kill. When I got the Special Edition DVD I unwisely watched it after midnight with the lights off. I couldn’t sleep until the sun came up. The opening scene of the rotting corpse in the cemetery wired to a headstone alone made my skin stagger. The scene where Pam first discovers Leatherface’s room, with the furniture made of bones and the chickens in bird-cages, gets scarier each time I perceive it. The last 20 minutes, at the dinner table, has to be one of the most grueling and realistic scenes to sit through ever made. The final few images–well, over 10 years went by between the last time I saw the movie and the time I watched it on DVD a few weeks ago, and I *still* could remember those shots so vividly it was like I saw it yesterday.

The DVD is incredible-the transfer is so crisp that it seems like the movie was filmed last year instead of in the early 70’s. Since I’d only seen it on “pan & scan” VHS, I never really appreciated how comely some shots of the rural setting are, and also how well-thought out and carefully assign together most of the cinematography is. Breathtaking, actually. Until the commentary pointed it out, I never realized how perfect and effective the long, continuous shot of Pam hesitantly getting up off the porch swing and slowly walking to the hide door is. This movie does not gaze at all amateurish, even though it was made on an extremely coarse budget.

The DVD is packed with frosty and bright special features. First, the commentary by Tobe Hooper, Gunnar Hansen aka Leatherface, and director of photography Daniel Pearl is attractive. There’s lots of subtle but grand elements in the movie I missed till now-for instance, the lack of almost any get or soundtrack that gives it a documentary feel, making it that noteworthy more disturbing. Hardcore fans of this movie know already this was NOT an easy shoot by any standards, but their accounts of how noteworthy energy and work it took to fetch obvious things good, not to mention the really tortuous things many of the actors went through…well, if any actor deserves to be paid millions for a movie, this cast certainly earned it. The dinner scene was the most horrendous- they could only do one engage, it went on for 20+ hours, and this was in 110 degree heat with no air conditioning. Gunnar Hansen said that by the raze, he was so out of it he started to contemplate he wasn’t acting. Kind of gives the price line “Who will survive and what will be left of them? ” a whole unique meaning.

There’s also some deleted and alternate scenes, including some “lost footage” never available before. With many of them, you can read the script excerpt of the scene first. There’s a hilarious blooper reel-the quality isn’t that titanic, but you’ll laugh your butt off. There’s lots of production notes and stills, along with shots of rare publicity material. A couple scenes are broken down shot by shot, with Hooper explaining why he made the directing and editing choices he did. There’s even more, I objective don’t have room for it all. The menu is also gorgeous tremendous. I highly recommend the Special Edition to anyone who is a fan of TCM. You’ll be able to exercise hours enjoying it, and they couldn’t have done a better job. My recommendation (for what it’s worth) is to earn this one speedy, because it would be a shame if it went out of print and so many people missed this extraordinary collector’s edition.

Words can’t even report the sheer awe, intensity, and insanity that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre provides. If you don’t know the legend by now, do yourself a favor and glimpse this extremely indispensable terror film. TCM is definately in my Top 5 common fright films and nobody can play Leatherface like salubrious ragged Gunnar Hansen. But Andrew Byrniarsky does arrive finish. The first time I saw this film, I was speechless. I didn’t know whether I enjoyed the film or hated it because I was in shock and anxiety. People today may say “Oh this movie is dreadful because the acting is abominable and it’s not even scary” or “The remake is so remarkable better”. I ask these people to behold closer at this sparkling film. It is one of the most gruesome, brutal, and in your face movies I have ever seen. It’s honest completely ruthless and is not ashamed to accept its point across. The remake I concept was generous but seriously doesn’t even touch the unique. It’s a completely different movie. You can’t fair behold the fresh once and then assume it…you have to peep it more than once so you can understand the insanity of the Sawyer family, the intensity of the house, the dismay from the kids, and the sound of the saw. You’ll really learn to enjoy it especially in this note modern special edition to the US. The extra features found on these two discs I hold are already accessible in the UK special edition release of this. But in case you don’t know the extra features, here they are (some are fresh additions) :
